Google Doodle: Who is Balamani Amma, on whom Google has made
The Google Doodle is dedicated to Balamani Amma, the poetess of Malayalam literature. It has been created by Kerala-based artist Devika Ramachandran.
Today’s Google Doodle is celebrating the 113rd birthday of Balamani Amma, the famous Indian poetess known as the grandmother of Malayalam literature. Born in Thrissur district of Kerala, Balamani Amma has been honored with several awards for her literary works, including the Saraswati Samman, India’s second highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan. Narayan Menon, who was also a popular Malayali poet, homeschooled him. Amma grew up on TV studying her impressive collection of books and works. At the age of 19 she married VM Nair, managing director and managing editor of Malayalam newspaper Mathrubhumi.
His first poem, Koppukai, was published in 1930.
He was recognized as a gifted poet from Parikshit Thampuran, the former ruler of the Kingdom of Cochin, who awarded him the Sahitya Nipun Puraskar.
Amma’s early poems glorified motherhood in a new light by adopting the ideas and stories of mythological characters and portraying women as powerful figures. She became known as the “Poet of Motherhood”. His best-known works include Amma (1934), Muthassi (1962) and Majuvinte Katha (1966).

Remembering Balamani Amma, the grandmother of Malayalam literature, on her 113th birth anniversary, Google Doodle shared a new graphic on July 19, 2022.
The doodle has been created by Devika Ramachandran.
Poet Balamani Amma was born on July 19, 1909 in Nalapat, Thrissur, Kerala. He never received any formal education and was educated at home by his maternal uncle Nalappat Narayan Menon, himself a renowned Malayali poet. It was her book collection and work that inspired Amma to become a writer. Another writer who greatly influenced his works was Nalapat Narayan Menon.
According to Doodle, her poems about her love for children and grandchildren earned her the titles of Amma (mother) and Muthassi (grandmother) of Malayalam poetry.
He died in 2004 and was cremated with full state honours.
